Desert to Garden - Branch 4

“Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”
(Matthew 21:9)

During this branch of Religious Education, pupils journey through the season of Lent and the celebration of Easter, exploring how Christians prepare their hearts and lives for the joy of the Resurrection. Desert to Garden reflects the movement at the centre of Christian faith: from the desert of preparation and reflection to the garden of new life and hope.

Across the school, pupils encounter key Gospel events from Jesus’ journey towards Jerusalem, including Holy Week and the Resurrection. Through Scripture, prayer, and reflection, children learn that Lent is a time when Christians turn back to God through prayer, acts of kindness, and caring for others, preparing to celebrate Easter with joy.

Teaching in this branch develops progressively. Younger pupils begin by recognising the important stories and symbols of Lent and Easter, learning about forgiveness, new beginnings, and God’s love. As pupils move through the school, they explore deeper theological themes such as mercy, sacrifice, conscience, and the meaning of the Paschal Mystery. They learn how Christians remember these events through liturgy, prayer, and the Sacraments, making links between Scripture and the life of the Church today.

Throughout Desert to Garden, Religious Education supports pupils not only in gaining knowledge but in reflecting on how faith is lived. Children are encouraged to consider how Jesus’ example inspires Christians to forgive, show compassion, and bring hope to others. The branch helps pupils understand that the journey from desert to garden is a journey of transformation, moving from sacrifice and repentance to renewal, joy, and new life.
