Special Educational Needs
Our Philosophy
At Our Lady of the Rosary, we believe every child is a unique and valued individual, created in the image of God and full of potential. Our Catholic ethos inspires us to welcome, respect and nurture all learners, ensuring that every child can flourish academically, socially, emotionally and spiritually.
We are committed to:
Inclusive education: All children are active, valued members of our school community.
High expectations: We have ambitious aspirations for every pupil and celebrate their successes.
Person-centred support: We listen carefully to the child’s voice and work in partnership with families.
Collaboration: We work closely with teachers, support staff, governors, external agencies and the parish to meet individual needs.
In partnership with parents, carers and professionals, we foster an environment where differences are valued and every child is encouraged to develop their unique gifts and talents, participate fully in school life and experience the joy of learning as a valued member of our community.
How We Support Children with SEND
We work in line with the SEND Code of Practice (2015), Surrey County Council’s graduated approach of Assess – Plan – Do – Review, and the expectations set out in Surrey’s Ordinarily Available Provision (OAP) guidance.
Our support includes:
Early identification: Teachers and the SENDCO monitor progress and work with families to identify needs promptly.
Quality First Teaching: Inclusive classroom practice ensures lessons are accessible to all, with adaptations such as differentiated tasks, visual supports and flexible groupings.
Targeted interventions: Where appropriate, children receive additional small-group or one-to-one support, for example in speech and language, literacy, numeracy or emotional regulation.
Specialist guidance: We liaise with professionals such as Surrey Educational Psychologists, Speech and Language Therapists and Occupational Therapists.
Social and emotional support: Nurture groups, sensory circuits and access to our sensory room help pupils develop self-regulation and confidence.
Personalised plans: Where appropriate, we work with families and external professionals to develop a Surrey Support Plan. Where a higher level of support is needed, the Local Authority (Surrey County Council) may carry out a statutory assessment to decide whether an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) is required.
Support through transitions: We plan carefully for key changes, such as moving between year groups or on to secondary school, ensuring pupils with SEND experience a smooth and positive transition.
Supporting medical needs: We follow our Supporting Pupils with Medical Conditions Policy and individual healthcare plans are agreed with parents, carers and relevant health professionals. Staff are trained where needed to provide care, manage medication safely and ensure that pupils with medical needs can participate fully in school life.
Working in Partnership
Parents, carers and pupils are central to everything we do. We actively seek the views of children about what helps them to learn and feel secure, and we maintain open, honest communication through regular meetings and review discussions. By working together, we build the best possible support for each child.
