Year 4

Welcome to Our Lady of the Rosary Year 4!

Year 4 is a purposeful and enriching year in which children build confidence as independent learners and take on new challenges with maturity and enthusiasm. As they move further into Key Stage 2, pupils are encouraged to think critically, work collaboratively, and take greater ownership of their learning. We value the God-given potential in every child and guide them as they grow academically, socially, and spiritually.

Our Learning Environment

The Year 4 classroom is a well-organised, calm, and stimulating setting where children are supported to manage increasing expectations with confidence. The space is arranged to promote independence, thoughtful collaboration, and sustained concentration as pupils engage with more advanced concepts. Clear routines help children take responsibility for their organisation and learning behaviours, while adults provide purposeful explanation, guidance, and questioning to deepen understanding.

How We Support Learning

Year 4 follows a carefully sequenced, knowledge-rich curriculum that helps children secure key concepts while extending their skills across a broad range of subjects. Learning is designed to build upon previous knowledge, allowing children to make connections, revisit key ideas, and strengthen long-term understanding.

Our curriculum includes:

  • White Rose Maths, supporting children to apply efficient strategies in number, calculation, fractions, measures, and reasoning.
  • Consolidation and development of times tables knowledge, preparing children confidently for the Multiplication Tables Check later in the year.
  • No Nonsense Spelling, enabling children to apply increasingly complex spelling patterns and rules with accuracy and independence.
  • Letter-join handwriting, promoting fluent, joined handwriting and pride in presentation.
  • A wide range of subjects taught through an engaging, structured curriculum, including science, history, geography, art, design technology, computing, music, PE, and Spanish.
  • Regular opportunities for discussion, extended writing, research, and problem-solving across the curriculum.

We continue to use SOLO taxonomy to support deeper thinking. Children learn how ideas can grow from simple recall to more complex understanding, and they develop their ability to explain, justify, and evaluate with increasing clarity.

Targeted support is provided where needed through small-group work, guided tasks, vocabulary scaffolds, and responsive feedback that helps children take the next steps in their learning.

Personal, Social, and Emotional Development

Year 4 is a year where children show increased maturity, resilience, and responsibility. Pupils learn to work thoughtfully with others, express their ideas with confidence, and manage challenges with a positive attitude. Staff help children reflect on their learning behaviours, build respectful relationships, and contribute positively to the classroom community.

Religious Education in Year 4

In Year 4, pupils deepen their understanding of Scripture, Catholic teaching, and the traditions of the Church. They explore Bible passages in more detail, reflect on how the teachings of Jesus guide our daily choices, and develop confidence in using religious vocabulary. Through thoughtful discussion, prayer, and reflection, children continue to grow in faith and understanding, recognising how they can live out Gospel values in their lives.

Partnership With Parents and Carers

We value strong, ongoing communication with families. Weekly Google Classroom updates outline the key learning for the week, highlight important vocabulary, and share practical ways parents/carers can support learning at home. These updates ensure families feel involved, informed, and confident in supporting their child’s progress.

We also encourage open conversation with parents/carers and invite families to school events where children’s work and achievements are celebrated.

Faith Life in Year 4

Faith is woven throughout daily life in Year 4. Children take part in class prayer, moments of quiet reflection, and acts of worship that help them deepen their relationship with God. They join the wider school community for liturgies, charitable projects, and celebrations that encourage them to live out Gospel values in meaningful ways. All children are supported and included, whatever their personal journey of faith.

A Place to Grow

Year 4 is a year of growing confidence, deeper understanding, and developing independence. Children strengthen their skills across the curriculum while broadening their knowledge of the world. Our aim is for every child to leave Year 4 equipped with confidence, curiosity, and readiness for the challenges and opportunities of upper Key Stage 2.
