Year 6

Welcome to Our Lady of the Rosary Year 6!

Year 6 is a memorable and rewarding year where pupils grow as leaders, thinkers, and role models within our school community. It is a time of increased responsibility, deeper learning, and preparation for the transition to secondary school. We believe every child is blessed with God-given gifts, and throughout Year 6 we support them to use these confidently, thoughtfully, and with a strong sense of purpose.

Our Learning Environment

The Year 6 classroom is a focused, welcoming, and aspirational space where pupils are encouraged to take ownership of their learning. Expectations are high, and children are supported to manage independent tasks, contribute to discussions with maturity, and reflect on their progress. Adults guide pupils through clear explanation, collaborative dialogue, and modelling that stretches thinking and encourages resilience. The classroom culture promotes respect, accountability, and pride in achievement.

How We Support Learning

Year 6 follows an ambitious, well-sequenced curriculum that builds on prior knowledge while preparing pupils for the expectations of secondary school. Lessons help children think critically, apply skills with confidence, and develop secure understanding across all subjects.

Our curriculum includes:

  • White Rose Maths, covering ratio, algebra, fractions, decimals, percentages, statistics, and multi-step reasoning.
  • No Nonsense Spelling, supporting accuracy, vocabulary development, and secure application of spelling rules in independent writing.
  • Letter-join handwriting, ensuring fluent, consistent presentation appropriate for upper Key Stage 2 expectations.
  • A broad, rich curriculum across science, history, geography, art, design technology, computing, music, PE, and Spanish.
  • Opportunities for extended writing, research, debate, problem-solving, investigation, and presentation.

As part of Year 6, pupils prepare for their Key Stage 2 SATs. Preparation is calm, structured and supportive, enabling pupils to feel confident and well-equipped without unnecessary pressure. Teaching focuses on strengthening understanding, revisiting key skills, and building self-belief.

We continue to use SOLO taxonomy to support sophisticated thinking. Pupils learn to analyse, evaluate, justify, and elaborate on their ideas with increasing confidence.

Support is tailored throughout the year to ensure all pupils make strong progress and feel ready for the next stage.

Personal, Social, and Emotional Development

Year 6 is a year of remarkable personal growth. Pupils develop leadership skills, take on responsibilities across the school, and work collaboratively with maturity and empathy. Staff help children navigate challenges positively, build resilience, and develop the confidence needed for secondary school.

Religious Education in Year 6

In Year 6, pupils explore Scripture, theology, and Catholic teaching with depth and reflection. They consider themes such as vocation, mission, discipleship, and justice, and reflect on how the teachings of Jesus guide our relationships and decisions. Through prayer, discussion, and study of the liturgical year, pupils deepen their understanding of faith and their responsibility to use their gifts to serve others.

Partnership With Parents and Carers

Strong communication with families continues to be central in Year 6. Weekly Google Classroom updates outline the week’s learning, key vocabulary, and suggestions for how parents/carers can support at home. Families are kept fully informed about key milestones, including SATs preparation, secondary transfer details, and special Year 6 events.

We welcome ongoing conversations with parents and carers throughout the year.

Faith Life in Year 6

Faith shapes daily life in Year 6. Pupils lead class prayer, participate in whole-school worship, and reflect on Gospel values as they act as role models to younger children. They take part in charitable projects and moments of service, deepening their understanding of compassion, justice, and responsibility within our Catholic community.

A Place to Grow

Year 6 offers a wealth of memorable experiences that help pupils grow in confidence, independence, and teamwork. A highlight of the year is the residential trip with PGL to the Isle of Wight, where pupils take part in outdoor challenges, team-building activities, and confidence-building adventures. This trip is an opportunity for children to develop resilience, independence, and strong friendships.

Another much-loved tradition is the end-of-year production, where pupils work together to rehearse, perform, and celebrate their time at primary school. It is a joyful moment that showcases creativity, teamwork, and pride.

By the end of the year, pupils leave Year 6 with a strong sense of achievement, secure knowledge across the curriculum, and the confidence to embrace the challenges and opportunities of secondary school.
